Levi Strauss & Co. is a privately held American clothing company known for its Levi's brand of denim jeans. It was founded in 1853 when Levi Strauss came from Buttenheim, Bavaria, to San Francisco to open a west coast branch of his brother’s New York dry goods business, and it produced its first jeans in 1873. The company is still based in San Francisco, and it now has annual revenue of approximately $4.6 billion, with a workforce of 16,700.
