Cigna - Company Profile

Cigna is an American global health services organization, based in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Its insurance subsidiaries are major providers of medical, dental, disability, life and accident insurance and related products and services, most of which are offered through employers and other organizations.


Originally founded as the Melville Corporation in 1922, CVS Health adopted its current guise in 2014. Operating in both healthcare and retail, CVS Health operates solely in the US yet still managed to achieve revenue of £126 billion in 2013.  

Eli Lilly

Founded in 1876 by its namesake, Colonel Eli Lilly, the modern company was the first to mass produce penicillin and human insulin. Eli Lilly now has an employee base of around 38,000 people and holds total assets worth in excess of $35 billion (2013).


GlaxoSmithKline plc is a British multinational pharmaceutical, biologics, vaccines and consumer healthcare company with headquarters in London. The company was established in 2000 by the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham plc. Its roots go back to 1843, when Thomas Beecham launched his Beecham’s Pills laxative.


Established in 1891 as an American subsidiary of the German company, Merck became an independent company in 1917 and has outgrown its former parent company to become one of the largest producers of pharmaceutical products in the world. It now has more than 75,000 employees and had revenue in excess of $48 billion in 2011.


Formed in 1996 from a merger between Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz Laboratories, Novartis is now the worlds largest pharmaceutical company in terms of sales. Based in Basel, Switzerland, it has an employee base of around 135,000 people and achieved revenue in excess of $57 billion in 2013.

Novo Nordisk

Novo Nordisk is a Danish multinational pharmaceutical company, headquartered in Bagsvaerd,  with production facilities in seven countries, and affiliates or offices in 75 countries. It was created in 1989 from the merger of two Danish companies, dating back to the 1920s.


The world’s largest producer of industrial enzymes, Novozymes was created in a 2000 demerger from Novo Nordisk. Headquartered in Copenhagen, the company has an employment base of just over 6,000 people and achieved revenue of over DKK 11 million in 2013.


Founded in 1849 in New York by two German immigrants, Pfizer is now one of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies. Still based in its native New York, the company has an employee base of around 78,000 people and has total assets worth in excess of $170 billion (2013).


Koninklijke Philips N.V., usually known as Philips, is a Dutch diversified technology company headquartered in Amsterdam with divisions focusing on healthcare, consumer lifestyle and lighting.
